Welp, hope you weren't planning on getting work done today.  Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides all briefly went down Monday due to an unknown issue, which appeared to affect both the consumer and business versions of Google's productivity apps.  The source of the issue wasn't immediately clear. A Google spokesperson referred to the company's G Suite Dashboard, which indicated Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Classroom were all experiencing a "service disruption" as of 10:30 a.m. PT. ...

Artificial intelligence should be regulated.  This is the stance of Alphabet (parent company of Google) CEO Sundar Pichai, expressed in the form of an op-ed article in the Financial Times Monday.  Pichai calls AI "one of the most promising new technologies," but also highlights possible risks stemming from careless use of AI, naming a few historical examples in which breakthrough new tech brought with it new issues.  ...

Back in 2018, Instagram launched its longform video brand IGTV. We're less than a month into 2020 and maybe the most prominent way to access IGTV is going away. TechCrunch reported Saturday that Instagram would remove the IGTV button that appears at the top right corner of users' home screens in the main Instagram app. The reason? Nobody was voluntarily tapping that button, an Instagram spokesperson told TechCrunch. ...

Google says it will "phase out" one of the main tools that allows companies to track you across the web. The company plans to eliminate support for third-party cookies in Chrome over the next two years. Google's announcement, which comes well after Chrome's main competitors have made similar updates, could be a major win for privacy advocates who have long decried the use of cookies for enabling companies to surreptitiously track users' browsing habits.  But, as we've previously noted, Goo...

Microsoft will no longer support Windows 7, one of the company's most successful products, starting Tuesday.  That means Microsoft will no longer patch Windows 7 bugs or offer technical assistance for the OS. And it also means that you should not be running Windows 7 anymore, period.  "Microsoft strongly recommends that you move to Windows 10 sometime before January 2020 to avoid a situation where you need service or support that is no longer available," the company wrote in a note to user...

There's been some buzz already about what Samsung will be revealing on Feb. 11, but it doesn't get much clearer than these newly surfaced photos. Images of a device purported to be Samsung's as-yet-unrevealed Galaxy S20 popped up on XDA Developers on Sunday. The website credits the photos back to an anonymous source. Assuming they're legitimate, the leak amounts to our first real look at Samsung's next flagship smartphone. ...

Apple is traditionally known as a hardware company selling its popular iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers. However, in recent years, Apple’s focus has shifted. Judging by the latest data, it appears that shift in focus has paid off. Apple is a services company now. “2019 was the biggest year for Services in Apple’s history,” said Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue in a company press release on Wednesday. ...

It only took seven days, but we've got the first big tech fight of 2020 on our hands. While the entire tech world is in Las Vegas for CES, Sonos sued Google for patent infringement, The New York Times reported. The speaker company claims Google stole Sonos tech to power its own popular wireless speakers, after the two corporations started working together in 2013.  As the Times pointed out, Google had not yet started producing its own speakers at that point. Sonos gave Google a close look ...

Samsung used CES to reveal a revolution in ball technology. Ballie is a rolling robot that follows you around — kind of like BB-8, but the size of a softball. According to Samsung, it can be used to patrol your home, its camera searching for burglars. That camera can also be used to capture "special moments," said Sebastian Seung, executive vice president at Samsung Electronics. Moments like your grandmother's bewildered face as a robot ball follows her to the bathroom in the middle of the ni...

Samsung announced Friday that it's launching cheaper versions of its flagship Galaxy S10 and Note 10 phones. No price details or release dates were given for the Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite. Samsung wasn't exactly generous with details, promising "key premium features" found in other Samsung phones at an "accessible price point." That, of course, means nice cameras The S10 Lite, for instance, has a wide-angle camera, macro lens, and 123-degree ultra-wide lens. The big new feature is c...

Going down the list of most popular car purchases in each state, it's easy to see that 2019 was the year of the pickup truck. Again.  Although hybrid or electric pickups aren't available yet, models from Tesla, Rivian, and Ford are coming soon and hoping to cash in on America's love affair with a sturdy workhorse. If the truck-obsessed public can hop onto electric, things look promising. Car shopping website ISeeCars.com looked through 10.9 million new car sales throughout the U.S. in 2019...

One of Apple's great virtues is its predictability. The company's annual routine hasn't changed all that much in the last five years or so, meaning fans can plan their purchases (and journalists can plan their coverage) weeks or months in advance, even without knowing every specific detail about every announcement. As such, we have a decent idea of what to expect from Apple in the new year, even if we haven't seen the fine print yet. We'll almost certainly get some combination of new iPhones,...
